Lethbridge Seniors Celebrate Reopening of Revitalized Westco Woodshop

Enhanced facility offers improved safety and functionality for older adults

The Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) is set to unveil its newly renovated  Westco Woodshop on Thursday, January 22, at 1:00 p.m.

This revitalized space underscores a significant community investment in hands-on learning, creativity, and active aging for older adults in Lethbridge.

Executive Director Kaitlynn Weaver expressed enthusiasm about the reopening, highlighting the dedication of volunteer members who have been actively preparing the woodshop.

“They’re super excited to officially open it and show Lethbridge what they’ve been working on because they’re the ones that built all the benches and shelves,” Weaver noted.

The renovated woodshop offers a safer, brighter, and more functional environment, enabling older adults to develop skills, foster social connections, and build confidence.

Improvements include an enhanced layout and updated equipment, generously donated by the estate of John Unrau, a longtime LSCO volunteer.

Weaver emphasized the woodshop's longstanding presence since the 1990s, describing it as “one of those things that was the best kept secret in Lethbridge.”

She added that while the woodshop retains its familiar appearance, it has been brightened, painted, cleaned, and organized.

“It was quite full of projects that had been around basically since the nineties from some of the members,” Weaver joked. “We just made sure it was clean and safe.”

Reflecting on Unrau's contributions, Weaver shared, “His sister donated some funds to the woodshop, and we were able to get a safer table saw for our members. And a few other different pieces of equipment to make sure it’s safe and updated for our members.”

Weaver invites seniors to explore the renovated workshop space.

“If you’re interested in woodworking, come see what it’s all about. But there’s so many other things we do here that are so amazing. People should check it out because there’s something here for everybody.”

The grand opening event will take place at the LSCO facility located at 500 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge.

Attendees can look forward to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tours of the Westco Woodshop.

This initiative reflects LSCO's ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Lethbridge seniors through engaging programs and community-focused projects.
