Lethbridge Launches First-Ever Curbside Battery Recycling Program in Alberta

The City of Lethbridge is launching a new and convenient way to deal with that drawer full of old batteries.

In a groundbreaking partnership with Call2Recycle Canada, the city is introducing Alberta's very first curbside battery collection program.

Running from November 18-28, the initiative allows residents to recycle used batteries on their regular green cart collection day.

Participation is simple: gather your old household batteries (like AA, AAA, C, D), tape the positive (+) terminals to prevent sparks, and seal them in a clear bag.

Place the bag on top of your green cart for collection crews to see.

This program offers a safe disposal option, as improperly discarded batteries can pose a serious fire hazard.

While special bags are available at locations like City Hall and public libraries, any clear resealable bag is acceptable.

Lethbridge Election Results Finalized: Hyggen to Lead New Council Amid Low Turnout

The results for the 2025 Lethbridge Municipal and School Election are now official.

Mayor-Elect Blaine Hyggen is set to lead the next City Council, joined by councillors Belinda Crowson, Jenn Schmidt-Rempel, Rajko Dodic, Ryan Wolfe, Al Beeber, Rufa Doria, Mark Campbell, and Ryan Parker.

This election was significantly impacted by new provincial legislation known as Bill 20, which required a manual hand-count of all ballots.

The procedural changes led to a substantial financial impact, doubling the election's cost by more than $300,000 compared to 2021.

Voter turnout was also alarmingly low, with just 19.35 per cent of eligible voters participating—a sharp decline from previous years.

Trustees for both the public and Catholic school divisions have also been confirmed.

The new Mayor and Council will be sworn in on October 27 to begin the 2025-2029 term.

While the month-long closure is an inconvenience, the city anticipates reopening the improved park on November 17, weather permitting.

Postal service across the country has come to a sudden halt as the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) launched an immediate nationwide strike.

While essential mail like government cheques will continue, Canadians should expect a complete stop to all other mail and parcel delivery for the duration of the strike.
